Sun Safety Policy
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun causes sunburn, skin damage and increases the risk of skin cancer. A sun safety policy helps protect children from harmful ultraviolet rays and promotes good health.
Sun Safety in Child Care
The following sun safety procedures are based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Cancer Society:
- Sun exposure will be limited between 11:30 am – 2:00 pm.
- Areas of shade will be available and children will be encouraged to play in them on very sunny days.
- Sunscreen will be applied before going outside and re-applied if we go outside more than 4 hours after the first application.
- Amy & Kids Co. will provide wide-brimmed sun hats for each child, and sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30.
- Each child is provided with a water bottle that can be brought outside and refilled as needed.
Sun Safety Begins at Home
Please apply a base coat of sunscreen to your child before bringing him/her to care. You may provide sunscreen for your child if you prefer a different brand that what we provide. Be sure to try it on your child at home to test for allergic reactions before sending it to child care.
You are welcome to provide unbreakable sunglasses or garments with sun protection for your child to wear outside.
Safety in the Summer Heat
As a nature program we prioritize outside time. When "real feel" temperatures are 90° or above I will use my discretion in determining how long it's safe for the children to play outside. Decisions will be based on the ages/abilities of the current group of children and outside conditions (breeze, sun vs clouds, etc). If time outdoors is limited we will burn off energy indoors.
He Was Content
I still remember fondly picking him up and seeing how content he was playing in the backyard!”

Severe Weather
Mother Nature likes to keep us on our toes with all kinds of weather, but our Severe Weather Policy helps us prepare for just about anything she can throw at us.
